MADONNA is embroiled in a new adoption controversy – competing with an Australian couple to adopt an African baby girl.The singer is planning to adopt a second Malawi orphan, 18-month-old Jessica Kondanani, after adopting 13-month-old David Banda last month.However Australian couple John and Angela Wilmot say they are already well into the process of adopting Jessica – and fear Madonna's celebrity status may prevent Jessica joining their family."We were already in the process of adopting Jessica and we hope we will be successful," Ms Wilmot, 34, said."We heard that Madonna was interested in a child, who we now hear is Jessica – but we are quite far down the line with our adoption."The Wilmots are Baptist aid workers who moved to Malawi to work as missionaries seven years ago with their two sons.The couple has already adopted four Malawian children from the Kondanani Orphan Care Centre and are keen to adopt more.It is believed Madonna, 48, originally intended to adopt Jessica before eventually choosing David because of concerns over his health.Madonna spent two hours with Jessica earlier this year and has returned to visit her.Shortly after taking David to her London home, Madonna confirmed her intentions to adopt a baby girl."I'm going to adopt another Malawian child very quickly. A baby girl this time," she said.The star and her husband, director Guy Ritchie, courted controversy when she adopted David and seemed to skirt the normal red tape couples face when adopting orphaned Malawi children, causing claims of preferential treatment.David's natural father then claimed he gave permission only for Madonna to educate the child.The singer returned fire, saying she adopted David because his mother and siblings had died of AIDS.A spokesman for Madonna refused to comment on the matter last night.
